Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying such treatments should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
