Government Official Says MoD Looking at Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Staff Advised to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Cars.

An defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the possible threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and staff have been instructed to avoid discussing classified information in any vehicles.

Security Advice for MoD Staff

During a recently aired interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD staff have been told not to talk about classified material while riding in China-made vehicles.

The minister stated that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but emphasised that safety is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any vehicle, because of the growing risks of surveillance that exist in all vehicle, to only have those secret conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about safety.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Defence Context

This revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off public transport and cause disruption to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.

This wider security environment highlights the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in all aspects of official activities, from vehicle use to discussions practices.
