RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
